HOTELS IN AMSTERDAM 2015 & 2016

Amsterdam has lots of hotels on offer providing you with cheap hotels and hostels to 5 star hotels offering the best in luxury and service.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and it’s largest city as well as a major financial centre.  It is an exciting place to visit, with a real buzz around the fabulous main square called the Dam, which links most of the main streets and the transport network. Amsterdam centre is not too large, relatively easy to get around on public transport which includes the canals of course! A good buy is the City Card which covers public transport, a pocket guide and provides over free and discounted offers.  It is a great destination for the weekend, do plan what you want to see to make the most of your time.

So what to do ? A canal cruise is a must, the quiet back canals offer wonderful views of the tall houses, built this way as the cost of canal frontages was huge. Many now house business and museums but you will see local families too. An evening cruise is a good idea, see the bridges illuminated and the street sides lit.

Then there is the world leading art, culture and the museums.  This is not a complete list by any means, but here are some of the best known.
The Hermitage Amsterdam museum, Dutch branch of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. This shows Russian history and culture, including paintings, sculptures and archaeological finds from the collection in St Petersburg. Peter the Great lived in Amsterdam the city for some time.

The Oude Kerk is the oldest church and the oldest building in Amsterdam. It dates to around 1250 and is located in the red-light district ! Perhaps best visited in daylight!

The Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world and the permanent collection includes paintings, drawings and letters.

The Anne Frank House is where a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank lived, hiding with her family for more than two years during World War II. Anne’s diary was published and is a best-seller around the world. There is an exhibition about the persecution of the Jews as well as discrimination in general. The house gets very busy, so maybe better later on in the day.

And where to stay?  All around the central area are top class hotels, offering everything you could want.  There is the Grand Amsterdam, the Amstel Intercontinental, the Pulitzer, Hotel D’Europe and the Grand Krasnapolsky, to name just a few. However, in the slightly less expensive market, maybe a smaller hotel, set in the quieter areas, with a more local feel, or even a self catering apartment.

And if you are more a people watcher than a culture vulture then the myriad of cafes, bars and restaurants offer more than enough choice. Just be a little careful, the coffee shops are the ones that can sell the soft drugs!! Even standing outside you can get a good idea of what they sell!

The night life offers everything you expect from a capital city, bars, night clubs, comedy clubs and restaurants of every level and type. Then there is the red light district, perhaps worth a look, but do be broad minded!  However, many visitors to Amsterdam spend their visit without even knowing it’s there.

So a city with a unique take on life with friendly people, fantastic architecture, great entertainment, world class art and culture and the canals, what more can you want?

HOTELS IN ROME

Accommodation in Rome is easy to find, and on our site we have plenty of late rooms, last minute cancellations and cheap hotels in Rome.

Rome, the most breathtaking city in Europe, where the spectacular and ancient stand side by side with the modern and stylish. Dior, Versace, Armani and Gucci are not out of place alongside The Coliseum, the Pantheon, St Peters Square, Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Roman Forum and Villa Borghese.

The Eternal City, the home of Popes and Emperors, is the destination for that special break, a honeymoon, an anniversary or that educational visit never to be forgotten. Temperatures in Rome vary between the mid 20`s to 30 degrees Centigrade between May and September, with July being statistically the driest month, and with so much to see and do we took advantage of the organised tours, available as a walking tour or by bus. The tours often specialise, perhaps a Monuments Tour, Ancient Rome Tour or a Papal Tour to meet your preferences.

Much of civilisation evolved from the Roman Empire and their dominance of the western world has left a legacy of culture and architecture in many countries, not least in Rome itself. The ancient sights of The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are breathtaking and not to be missed. The magnificent squares of the Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and of course St Peters Square, with The Vatican and Sistene Chapel close at hand amongst the most popular together with the parkland of The Villa Borghese.

An excursion into modern Rome with the diverse shopping opportunities of The Piazza di Spagana where the latest fashion of women’s` clothes, shoes and jewellery abound with Prada, Gucci, Fendi and Armani close at hand. The Piazza di Campo de Fiori is the oldest market in Rome whilst Porta Portese is a well established flea market, and the only one open on Sundays (until 2pm) and can be found close to the Trastevere area.

For lunch, or as evening falls, Rome offers a vast choice of restaurants and trattorias with more than the traditional pizza and pasta available, although they are often excellent, and pasta dishes however do form an integral part of most local menus, as does wine for which there seems to be an endless choice. Romantic, outdoor, trendy and family friendly, they are all available, but be aware that some restaurants close to the main tourist attractions may prove more expensive and perusing the menus before dining is advisable. Whist walking around this beautiful city stop at one of the ice cream shops or parlours, there is nothing like Italian ice cream on a warm afternoon.

For those seeking late night entertainment the Trastevere area is home to coffee shops, bars restaurants, clubs and discos although some clubs in Rome close in the mid summer months as the various festivals take their place.

As spectacular as the ancient monuments and buildings of this glorious cityare during the day, the extensive lighting and tasteful floodlighting at night offers a different perspective of this uniquely romantic city providing a wonderful experience to young and old alike.
